​Adjustment of status is a process that allows certain non-U.S. citizens within the United States to apply for lawful permanent residency (also known as a Green Card) without having to leave the U.S. It is particularly useful when transitioning from temporary status to lawful permanent resident. Adjustment of status is a procedure allowing certain aliens who are already present in the U.S. to apply for immigrant status.
