Detention Center Visitor

Kern Welcoming & Extending Solidarity to Immigrants

Join monthly visits from SLO County to provide companionship and support to detained individuals. KWESI provides names and identification numbers of people who have requested visits. Transportation is coordinated through local volunteers, and Spanish speaking ability is not required. This meaningful opportunity allows volunteers to offer human connection to those experiencing detention.

KWESI is a nonprofit organization that visits immigrants in the Mesa Verde detention facility in downtown Bakersfield and Golden State Annex in McFarland and advocates on their behalf. We work to end the isolation of immigrants in detention and provide emotional support through visitation and letter-writing and advocate for the abolition of ICE detention. We also provide immediate post-release aid in the form of food, clothing, travel supplies, and short-term shelter. Our organization is affiliated with the national group: Freedom for Immigrants.

Contact Jan Meslin at meslinjan@gmail.com or 858-395-4675 to join the volunteer database and coordinate transportation for monthly visits.
